History has been made this weekend!

Disney and Marvel Studios have something to celebrate after this weekend saw them defeat other fellow Disney title and made history in the process.

Avengers: Infinity War has set a new opening weekend record in America, opening to a marvelous $250 million. This opening breaks Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ opening when it debuted to $248 million back in December 2015.

Last Monday, I opened up a poll letting you vote at where you think Infinity War will debut with. The winning selection was around $240-247 million, being a little pessimistic, but ever so close! Although, one person voted the $248 million+ option, so someone thought Infinity War had a chance to be king of the box office when the poll closed before Friday grosses came in. Clearly, my $230 million prediction was way too pessimistic.

Its prospects look great as Infinity War scored a mighty “A” from CinemaScore.

Internationally, Infinity War had a combined total of $380 million, setting #1 openings around the world. The UK had the mightiest opening of all countries with a stellar $42.2 million. However, it wasn’t just America that set a new opening weekend, Infinity War also claimed new opening weekend records in South Korea ($39.2 million), Mexico ($25.1 million), Brazil ($18.8 million), Philippines ($12.5 million), Thailand ($10 million), Indonesia ($9.6 million) and Malaysia ($8.4 million). That is a lot of record breakings!

Worldwide, Infinity War is now at a huge $630 million, easily making Infinity War the biggest (you hear the sound of that record being smashed again!) global opening weekend of all-time, beating Universal’s Fate of the Furious ($542 million) – doing so even without China, set to launch there May 11th.

What makes this weekend in America even more marvelous for Disney and Marvel Studios is that Black Panther managed to sneak back in the top five, grossing an additional $4.38 million in fifth place, with a current total of $688 million. This is the first time two Marvel Studios’ titles are in the top five.

Worldwide, Black Panther is tantalizingly close at topping Star Wars: The Last Jedi’s $1.332 billion, as Black Panther is currently at a global total of $1.331 billion.
