Box Office Report: ‘Incredibles 2’ smashes the animated opening weekend record

It’s a good day for Disney and Pixar as they set another record this weekend… that’s three opening weekend records in a span of a single year!

We all knew Incredibles 2 would smash Pixar’s own record for highest animated opening weekend, but not many of us would guess it would go and find a place in the top ten? But alas, it did, and it is an incredible number! (You know me by now, I always find time to put in a pun).

Incredibles 2 opened with an incredible (I did it again) $180 million this weekend in America, becoming the new record holder for highest animated opening weekend, a feat once belonged to Finding Dory ($135.1 million). The highly anticipated sequel also secured a spot in the top ten of highest opening weekends at #8, just behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million) and in front of Captain America: Civil War ($179.1 million).

This puts Incredibles 2 in a healthy position as both of those Marvel films went on to finish with over $400 million. Factoring its A+ CinemaScore and solid word of mouth, it may end up grossing over $500 million to become the highest grossing animated release in America. It will most certainly surpass the first Incredibles American haul by next week as the sequel is only $81 million away from surpassing the 2004 original. Now that’s incredible!

It wasn’t just America that proved to be incredible, but also around the world as it secured the highest grossing opening weekend for a Pixar film in several markets including Mexico, Australia and Argentina. Overall, its international gross is $51.5 million, for a worldwide total of $231.5 million. Its definitely looking good when it has only opened in 26% of its international roll-out as Incredibles 2 is set for more big openings in July and August with the UK, France, Brazil and Japan on the way, with China the next big one coming up next weekend.

As for other Disney titles, it was a mixture of bad and good news. The bad news is obviously Solo: A Star Wars Story’s disappointing theatrical run, raking it another $9.3 million this weekend for a current American gross of only $192.8 million. Globally, it sits at $339.5 million, and is looking to finish around $370 million when its all said and done, becoming the lowest grossing live-action Star Wars film of all-time, with and without inflation. Ouch!

The good news is of course the continued impressive performance of Avengers: Infinity War. Now sitting at a current American gross of $664.2 million and globally now over $2 billion, it has now become the fourth film to ever top $2 billion, and Disney’s second $2 billion release behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion).
