What happened when we were away?

A lot has happened since we last made a post.

In case you’ve been waiting for us to deliver news, here’s what had happened since our sudden hiatus.

New trailer for ‘Captain Marvel’

Marvel Studios debuted the brand new trailer for Captain Marvel, and like the first trailer, this one is another divided response. While I’m mildly interested with Captain Marvel, the trailers haven’t done anything to convince me to be excited (am I feeling MCU fatigue?) This new trailer gives us more of Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) about her trying to figure out her past from her multiple memories, galactic heroic action and our introduction to Skrulls to the MCU.

Captain Marvel is scheduled for a March 7th release.

Ralph breaks the box office

The first newest release for Walt Disney Animation Studios since Moana in 2016 (has it really been 2 years? Wow!) Ralph Breaks the Internet easily scored a #1 finish in its opening weekend with a stellar 5-day opening of $84.7 million. This puts Ralph as the second biggest Thanksgiving 5-day opening weekend ever in North America, right behind other stellar hit Frozen ($93.6 million). Judging the 3-day weekend, it scored $56.2 million, up from Wreck-It Ralph’s $49 million opening weekend back in 2012. Since its opening weekend, Ralph has pocketed a healthy $128 million in America with an early worldwide gross of $216 million with plenty of major markets still left to open throughout December and January, including here in Australia for its anticipated December 26th release.

‘Daredevil’ canceled too soon at Netflix after three seasons

In news that didn’t seem shocking, but was, Daredevil has been canceled after three stellar seasons on Netflix. The show that started the Defenders universe has always been a hot favourite since it debuted and launched a new avenue for Netflix in the superhero/comic book business. But with Disney+ set to launch, it seems like both Disney and Netflix couldn’t see eye to eye about the future of Daredevil, as evident in Charlie Cox’s statement about the cancellation over at Entertainment Weekly.

“A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did. The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that.”

It seems unlikely that Disney+ will pick-up these iteration of Daredevil as the upcoming streaming service is catering more to a family crowd, and not to these super violent/mature series that Netflix has produced that has attracted a strong following.

Netflix and Marvel Studios both provided a joint statement about the cancellation.

“Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

First look at the live-action ‘Lion King’

Disney revealed the first look at their “live-action” remake The Lion King, based on the 1994 smash hit animated motion picture. I use the words “live-action” very loosely as it is more so as a CGI remake of The Lion King. While the imagery is unbelievably beautiful, I lean more on the skeptic side for this remake as do we really need a CGI remake of the animated film? It looks closely to the animated film in terms of shots and of course music choice, so if you’re someone who wants a CGI Lion King remake, well this is surely for you.

The Lion King opens in theatres on July 18th.

New Disney Channel series announced ‘Sydney to the Max’

A brand new Disney Channel series is coming. Sydney to the Max is the newest half-hour multi-camera sitcom that focuses on the experiences of growing up as a middle schooler, so essentially like Girl Meets World. However, there’s a twist! The series is set in two timeframes, one set in the 90’s with a younger Max and his best friend Leo and obviously today’s soon to be 2020’s culture with Sydney figuring out her place in the world.

The series premieres in America in January 2019, while an Australian airdate has yet to be determined.
