Streaming service Stan announces a Disney deal

Stan announces a Disney deal for its popular contents, but what does this mean for Disney+ over in Australia?

In a surprising move, Stan has announced a partnership with Disney that will see the streaming service to have access to Disney’s popular contents which includes films (both live-action and animated) and television shows which range from the studios’ most popular companies such as Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, Pixar, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Disney Channel.

The deal includes such animated film from the Toy Story trilogy, Frozen, Finding Nemo, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, The Incredibles, Up and many more! It also covers the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the many Star Wars flicks. For the kids, it covers a lot of Disney Channel and Disney Junior programming from TV series to their popular DCOM flicks which includes some titles such as Descendants, High School Musical, Camp RockSofia the First, Tangled: The Series, Andi Mack, DuckTales among many more titles from both kids networks.

Stan CEO Mike Sneesby stated this in a statement:

“Disney is one of the most iconic entertainment brands globally and we are very proud to be partnering with them to bring a huge collection of their biggest live-action and animated films and TV programmes to our customers. With hits from across all their biggest franchises including Disney Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm as well as Disney Channels’ TV series and movies, the deal further illustrates Stan’s ongoing commitment to provide our customers with the world’s very best premium entertainment.”

With this newly announced deal, one has to question at what does this mean for the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. Now, this deal does not mean exclusive to Stan, meaning when Disney+ launches it can contain a lot of this content that is already on at Stan, but in terms of competition that doesn’t make much business sense. Perhaps this will give Australian audiences a taste of Disney’s content before Disney+ launches, which may be expected to launch here sometime in 2020 given American audiences won’t get Disney+ until late 2019, and the content will be removed off Stan once Disney+ launches? I’m only speculating, but nonetheless this is a good deal if you are already a Stan subscriber and a huge get for Stan.
